Flashback – Scotland's Williams Bros. Brewing

The first stop on our upcoming trip to the Scottish Highlands will be at Williams Bros. Brewing Co., one of the OG's of Scottish craft brewing that has successfully evolved with the times.

Here is an article published in the June-July 2000 issue of Ale Street News describing Bruce Williams' appearance at The Brickskellar in Washington, DC.

One part that did not appear in print was his description of the first harvest for their Heather Ale (Fraoch). He said they were aware of rumors of possible psychedelic effects of flowering heather, but didn't pay much attention. However after a couple of hours of gathering wild flowering heather in the Highlands they discovered they were "tripped out of our heads." Flowering heather is purported to contain traces of ergot, a mold that has similar properties to LSD.
